This project was completed for a business start-up case competition called Hack the City. The competition focused on creating solutions for the aging population to which, along with a partner, I conceptualized a multi-platform app to optimize the healthcare provider-patient interaction as presented to IBM and Hamilton Health Sciences professionals. Ultimately, the app encourages adherence to prescribed treatment plans in osteoporosis patients, which include physiotherapy exercises for preventative care, incentivized through the use of gamification. The competition guided us to define the problem at hand well, conduct our own research to support the feasibility and demand of our conceptualized product, as well as look at pre-existing studies to draw out the potential benefits of our app. This project allowed for me to translate research data into a useable form that could be applied to improve public health. Moreover, it prompted me to thoroughly analyze results from my own primary research and employ the results to apply it to a practical setting, increasing intrinsic motivation and eliciting positive behaviour modification in older adults with an emphasis on effective knowledge translation.
